(Some of) My Favorites
(This page links to explicit content, please be advised)
The ones that stick with me. This is by no means a complete list, just a few that really shaped my journey.
2001 • Nu-Metal
Why it’s a favorite:
I remember the first time a I heard System of a Down, my friend in elementary school showed me Chop Suey on the way to the bus to go home. I didn't know it then, but he'd just shown me the group that would become my absolute favorite years later.
It was really hard to narrow down a pick to just one of their albums, but I decided on Toxicity because it's just so consistently heavy, and while I think Steal This Album! still has the been run of slower tracks, the couple that are on here (ATWA, Aerials) are still absolutely amazing.
Go-to Track(s):
Jet Pilot, Shimmy
Maggot Brain — Funkadelic
1971 • Funk
Why it’s a favorite:
What is there to say about Eddie Hazel's 10 minute opus that hasn't already been said? Probably the strongest opener for an album I've ever heard, and a track I can consistently get completely lost in.
The rest the of the album is pretty good too, much more in line with Clinton and company's usual funky antics. George's baritone vocals on Can You Get To That are always fun to imitate, and Wars Of Armageddon (fart sound effects and all) almost makes you feel like you were right there taking LSD with the whole group.
Go-to Track(s):
Maggot Brain, Can You Get To That
The Archer — Alexandra Savior
2020 • Dream Pop
Why it’s a favorite:
This album. This is one of the most important albums in my life (melodramatic, I know, but hear me out.) During that whole... thing that happened in 2020, I had just moved down to the city, a first for me, so I was already anxious about it. Then the thing happened, and the county I'd just moved to? The worst hit county in the state.
I was working minimum wage at a grocery store, no hazard pay. Things weren't going well for me, mentally speaking. I'd lost interest in most things, and the thing made it hard to engage in any new hobbies, so I turned back to music. And this album, from the first note, made me feel a sense of calm, a reconnection with the joy I found in discovering new music, and listening to music in general. Without this album, I wouldn't be writing this blog right now. (Ok, that's more that enough sappiness for one page.)
Go-to Track(s):
All of them
