Mainstream Monday - Three Days Grace is BACK?!?

 Well, kind of...

As some of you may know, Three Days Grace's original singer, Adam Gontier, left the band more than a decade ago in 2013. He left behind a 4 album run of absolute bangers, and made a permanent impact on every angsty teen from 2003 onward.

The first album I ever head from them was One-X, which was on a hand-me-down windows xp computer i got from my neighbor. I didn't have the internet at this point, so I spent most of my time on the computer playing solitaire, bookworm adventures, and listening to One-X. It became the soundtrack of my teenage depression.

Needless to say, I was very upset when I found out Adam was leaving the band, and of course, being a dumb emo-wannabe teen, I never even thought to start listening to Saint Asonia, so I sulked and delved even deeper into TDG's catalog.

Anyways, I never cared for Matt Walst's iteration of Three Days Grace. Of course, for a while, it was just bitterness because a new guy (who also sings one of my most loathed songs) was suddenly singing Adam's deeply personal lyrics. But after a while (much longer than I'd like to admit), I decided to actually give it a chance, and my opinion didn't change much.

Compared to Adam, Matt's lyrics felt very surface-level, much more in-line with a 'wow, I feel sad too sometimes!' listening experience. None of the songs I heard with Matt as the frontrunner felt like they had that deeply personal, introspective sadness that Adam's had.

    But now, Adam is back.

Earlier this year, Three Days Grace released a track called Mayday, which featured both Adam and Matt. I listened to it when it was announced, and hearing Adam's voice on something fresh was like a nostalgia blast in the best way, even though he was on the track much less than I would've liked.

Unfortunately, that's a trend that continues into the tracks they've released for their upcoming album, Λ𝖫𝖨𝖤𝖭Λ𝖳𝖨Ø𝖭.

It start's off great, Kill Me Fast sounds like it's straight off of One-X. Those deep, moody lyrics I feel in love with as a kid were back, the familiar tone of the guitar and drums, oh my god, it was like hearing that album for the first time all over again.

Even Matt's lyrics on this track are more personal, which really surprised me.

But then you get to the rest of the album, and that all too familiar post-Shinedown era drum beat kicks in again, and Matt falls back into his familiar superficial sadness. Speaking of Shinedown actually, did they just bite off a track that Brent Smith didn't want? Because dear god, Dominate is about as far from Three Days Grace as it can get.

Now that I think about it, Dominate and Apologies are much closer to something from Falling in Reverse than Shinedown. Either way, I'm massively disappointed. I can see why they decided to start with Kill Me Fast.

  1. Had no clue Adam came back, though I remember enjoying a couple of Saint Asonia songs (even though at first I just thought the name was cool)
